Lots of people think they can, but not all make the grade.
I’ve lost count of the number of awful articles that I’ve been sent by people keen to get some of the limelight. These articles range from being boring as hell to a thinly-disguised sales pitch to simply being very badly written with no clear argument, structure or sense of basic grammar and punctuation.
What makes it worse is that very often these articles are written by business and charity leaders – people at the top of their game. People who should know better!
It was my frustration at being on the receiving end of so much crap copy that motivated me to launch a new training course aimed at – yes you guessed it – teaching people how to write.
You, your profile and other stories: how to write copy that will get you noticed includes workshop sessions on important issues such as language and readability, storytelling, headline writing and tips for writing for the mainstream media.
There’s a workbook containing loads of useful resources and exercises to complete, and a Facebook Group for continued support and encouragement. It also includes time with me, on a one-to-one basis, for tailored feedback and coaching.
The first cohort of the course has almost come to an end. We’ve had some great contributions from the participants, and the response to the training has been very positive.
Gwenaelle Joubert Beaumont, who is the fundraising and communications officer at Bipolar Scotland, said:
“I have really enjoyed the course. The sessions have provided me with valuable do’s and don’ts. The exercises really boosted my confidence, so much so that I even went ahead and wrote and published some of my first blogs. Thanks to Becky a lot has clicked into place and I am even starting to see how to get my ‘brand’ into my writing.”
We are now taking bookings for the February and March cohorts. If you’re interested in strengthening your writing skills, want to learn more about how to promote yourself and your organisation through the written word, and are keen to network with other professionals, get in touch today.
