Training workshops and communications strategies help address the skills gap among small charities

Executive summary

Slack Communications delivers skills-training and communications strategies for the FSI’s small charity members. We also wrote the PR strategy for the FSI’s annual event, Small Charity Week.

Challenges and objectives

Small charities – those with an income of less than £1.5m per year – represent 97% of the charity sector, but only 22%  of the resources. This can severely impact upon their ability to achieve their vision and deliver the services that so many individuals and communities need.

The FSI supports small charities by helping them build and share their knowledge and skills, amplify their voice to policy makers and raise vital funds. Its services include consultancy, training and development opportunities, and Small Charity Week, which celebrates and raises awareness of the essential work this sector provides.

How we helped

In 2011, the FSI commissioned Becky Slack to deliver a marketing and communications workshop. Since then, the list of training she delivers has been extended to include social media and content marketing.

In addition, Slack Communications works alongside the FSI to complement its consultancy offer, providing communications audits and strategies to small charities around the country. See Trinity Community Arts case studies for more information on how we do this.

Finally, we supported the FSI with the development of a PR strategy to promote Small Charity Week 2012. This strategy was written in such a way that it enabled the charity to use it repeatedly over the years, creating excellent value for money.

The results

Becky’s training workshops for the FSI are very positively received by those who attend – 96% rate the training courses as good or excellent value for time away from work, and 98% report that the training will help them do their job better.

“Great session.  Really relevant examples, informative, will give
structure to our strategy”

The Small Charity Week PR strategy has also been very successful – enabling the FSI to extend its reach within the regional media and charity sector trade press.

What the client says

“The FSI has worked with Slack Communications for several years, commissioning them to deliver courses as part of our wider training programme for small charities; and to support the FSI’s own PR and marketing activities.

“The Marketing and Communications Strategy developed provided our small team with clear guidelines on how to make the most of our resources to have the biggest impact. It covered all key areas from social media to PR and meant we were able to be more successful in securing interest and coverage for Small Charity Week 2013. It was so useful we have adapted it as our strategy for 2014 and 2015”
